2010 Waste Training Institute Schedule Announced
First launched at the 2009 WasteExpo to rave-reviews, the Waste Training Institute returns and will again co-locate with WasteExpo 2010 – now with more workshops! The Waste Training Institute is a new industry-specific business training initiative designed to help employees in small, medium and large waste services companies run their businesses better, smarter and more effectively.

The Waste Training Institute 2010 will be introduced during a
FREE 1-hour session open to all badged WasteExpo participants on
Tuesday, May 4, at 11:00am. This will be the perfect opportunity to learn about this new program, ask questions and provide feedback to guide the future development of the WTI to ensure it meets your needs. During this session, you will also have the opportunity to learn more about the WTI Workshops that will be offered throughout the week of WasteExpo. Separate registration for each of the WTI workshops is required and can easily be added to any WasteExpo registration option.

Business at its simplest is to charge more for your product or services than it cost to produce it. That difference is profit. The key to pricing your services is to have a clear understanding of what makes up your cost. You must be able to identify the various elements of your cost, direct cost, indirect or overhead cost and incremental cost. Industry veteran
Eddie Dick will lead you through the process of understanding your true costs. Do you capture, monitor and report these costs in a manner that allows you to utilize them accurately? Is your financial reporting system designed to accurately reflect the various costs? Does it capture that cost by each line of service so you can be sure that not only is the company making money but so is each service. How does productivity impact your cost and your competitiveness in the marketplace? Interest cost, depreciation expense, asset life all impacts the cost structure. This program will address what should go into your direct cost, how to identify and measure your indirect (Sales, General and Administrative) cost and what can be viewed as incremental cost. We will review and discuss various methods for measuring and reporting those costs so they will be useful for financial reporting and for management use. With our cost identified we can work on our desired profit margins and our pricing structure.

A wise man once said “If you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it,” and no statement is more accurate today in describing the day to day lives of a solid waste hauler. As each busy day goes by, employees clock in and the trucks roll out to do their work, all the while ringing phones and sales people add to the book of business. But in many cases it may not be until the end of the month or even year, when the hauler finally finds out if all their hard work translated into profits. Our business can be measured by a few simple metrics that haulers can use to compare yesterday with today, and then help them decide what has to be done to make tomorrow even better. During this session, Kessler Consulting Inc.’s
Don Ross will break down the busy hauler’s day into industry standard key performance indicators (KPI); the building blocks of productivity measurement that will provide haulers with the insight they need to make better day-to-day and month-to-month decisions to improve their business over time. Usefulness of this data doesn’t stop there however. KPI can be used to effectively manage employees, verify validity of customer pricing over time, and even to assist with new equipment specifications. Following on the heels of the Pricing and Costing Workshop where attendees learned how to price their services, this workshop will show haulers how to leverage their operation for further profit gain as incremental improvements on a daily and weekly basis are converted into earnings at the end of the year.

In this fast-paced 90-minute session, DriveCam’s
Del Lisk and NSWMA’s David Biderman will provide you with an overview of behavior-based safety programs and how they can help you realize a 50% reduction in claims costs associated with risky driving – dollars that immediately drop to your bottom line. You’ll learn about the power behind these types of programs and steps to integrate them into your current (or future) corporate safety programs. Using real-life video, you’ll review common risky driving behaviors in waste vehicles, root cause analysis and solutions to reduce these behaviors and the resulting accidents. And to ensure you have the information you need to run an effective driver safety program, you’ll receive effective coaching tips and tricks – specifically designed for waste operators.
David Biderman will add his perspective as NSWMA’s safety director and will discuss the federal government’s fatality and OSHA inspection data for solid waste companies, the leading causes of accidents and injuries to solid waste workers and how to prevent them, and will review NSWMA safety programs that can help haulers and local governments improve both their safety performance and their bottom line.
Meet the Waste Training Institute Workshop Leaders:
David Biderman, NSWMA. David Biderman is the Safety Director and General Counsel for the National Solid Wastes Management Association. David is a frequent safety instructor at NSWMA and SWANA events, helps companies with OSHA and operational safety issues, and writes a monthly safety column for Waste Age.
Eddie Dick, Eddie Dick and Associates. Eddie Dick has been involved in the industry for over 30years. First, from the public side as a County Manager in North Carolina. He then spent 15 years with Waste Industries Inc. as Executive VP. Eddie served as President/COO at Texas Disposal Systems and has operated Eddie Dick and Associates for the past six years.
Del Lisk, DriveCam Inc. Del Lisk serves as vice president of safety services for DriveCam Inc. He is responsible for developing safety policy and procedures and overseeing training for DriveCam’s 1500 fleet customers. Prior to joining DriveCam, Lisk spent 21 years with Smith System Driver Improvement Institute, and served as company president. While at Smith Systems, Lisk developed fleet safety programs and personally delivered training to more than 10,000 fleet drivers. Del has appeared on Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Discovery Channel to name a few.
Don Ross, Kessler Consulting, Inc. Don Ross is a Solid Waste Consultant and Project Manager specializing in collection and transfer operations. Don has over 21 years of experience managing and directing solid waste collection and transfer operations for a number of private and public sector organizations, including 13 years with Waste Management Inc. Don’s well-rounded background also includes a number of years as a municipal Solid Waste Director in Florida, and he is also a member of the Solid Waste Association of North America’s certified training faculty.

FUTURE Waste Training Institute Offerings:
Workshops will eventually be rolled out as 1 -and 2-day regional events, online curriculum, etc., eventually leading to the development of an industry recognized certification program.
